Alexander Contompasis, an Antifa member, was given a twenty-year prison term for the stabbing deaths of two Proud Boys in January 2021 by a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. The incident happened at the Albany Capitol Building during a “Stop The Steal” protest. Both of Contompasis’s victims made it out alive to testify against him in court.
The incident was described by Justice Roger McDonough and Assistant District Attorney Bryanne Perlanski. Contompasis, according to Perlanski, came to the protest with “violence in his mind and in his heart,” and he planned to harm people there. McDonough claimed that Contompasis was driven to attack by the “toxicity in the body politic,” and that he was convinced that Contompasis had attended the protest with the express intention of committing violence for political ends.
Contompasis, the defense argued, was acting in self-defense because he was on the ground during the altercation and was reacting to someone who was being attacked. But Perlanski said that Contompasis couldn’t have it both ways, since he claimed both self-defense and that he didn’t stab the victims. Though both victims were violent, she said neither one had a knife with them that day.
A defense attorney named Jasper Mills argued that if Contompasis hadn’t intervened, other people might not have made it through the day. Yet Justice McDonough cut him off, saying, “That’s exactly the justification defense that the jury rejected, correct?”
Justice McDonough ultimately handed down a twenty-year prison term for Contompasis, citing the seriousness of the attack and the need to protect the public from further violence as reasons for the lengthy sentence. The Times Union released a video detailing the assault at the Albany Capitol Complex, which graphically depicted the violence that took place.
Contompasis’s conviction and sentence should serve as a cautionary tale to those considering resorting to violence during political demonstrations. Although people have the right to peacefully protest and voice their opinions, they do not have the right to use violence to achieve their goals. Because of his actions, Contompasis will be an example for the next twenty years in prison.
