Days after stopping the National Hockey League’s illegal job fair, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken another swipe at the Biden administration. Speaking to Fox News’s Tucker Carlson Wednesday night, the always outspoken Republican said he has had to activate the Florida National Guard to help with the influx of illegal migrants washing up on the Florida Keys. Normally the responsibility of the Coast Guard, DeSantis said they have been overwhelmed as of late, despite asking the federal government for help.
“The Biden Administration has left the Coast Guard out to dry,” he said.
For weeks now, boatloads of migrants have flooded the small communities that dot the archipelago. The majority of the migrants are coming from Cuba and Haiti, DeSantis said. He added that he believes the Cuban government has orchestrated some of their voyages. The migrants often arrive in makeshift vessels that are barely seaworthy and have to be rescued by the Coast Guard or local law enforcement, taking officers away from their regular duties. Many times the boats wash ashore on private property and, without any help from the federal government, become the responsibility of the property owner to have them removed and can run into the thousands of dollars.
Instead of leaving that burden on the property owners, the state will now remove the boats, DeSantis said. Joe Biden isn’t the only big name DeSantis has taken on in the last few days. The National Hockey League had planned a job fair in Fort Lauderdale on Feb. 2 seeking to, in the NHL’s words, “diversify job seekers pursuing a job in hockey.” According to news reports, a LinkedIn posting for the event said it was open to anyone 18 and older meeting certain criteria.
The since deleted post welcomed only people “identifying as female, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+ and/or a person with a disability.” Almost as an afterthought, veterans were also welcomed to apply.
In a statement from the governor’s press Secretary Bryan Griffin, the event was decried as discriminatory.
“…we do not abide by the woke notion that discrimination should be overlooked if applied in a politically popular manner or against a politically unpopular demographic.”
