Ron DeSantis has recently rejected the inclusion of AP Black History Classes in High School for College credit. As a conservative, I wholeheartedly agree with Governor DeSantis. His recent statements regarding the rejected Advanced Placement class on Black history in the state of Florida definitely hit the mark.
What Type of Course is AP Black History?
It is important to note that Florida’s education standards not only include but require the teaching of AP Black history topics as a core component of the already used curriculum. The proposed AP Black History Class in question was intended to be an additional course for Advanced Placement credit. This means the focus of the year would be only on the black perspective.
Govenor Ron DeSantis recently said that he wants “education, not indoctrination.” He mentioned the course was riddled with “radical political perspectives that failed to capture the spectrum of black opinion. Governor DeSantis is correct in stating that there should be a clear distinction between education and indoctrination in our schools. The incorporation of critical race theory and other controversial ideological material, such as queer theory and the abolition of prisons, into this class would have been a clear violation of this principle.
Why AP Black History isn’t Necessary Curriculum
It is vital that we ensure that the education our children receive is based on facts and objective analysis, rather than being used as a vehicle for pushing a political agenda. I commend Governor DeSantis for his commitment to upholding these standards and protecting our students from any form of indoctrination. Black History is already part of the curriculum and unnecessary as an additional offering, especially with teaching shortages and other educational struggles going on in 2023.
Black History is Our History
As a nation, we must continue to strive for the inclusion of all perspectives and diverse voices in our educational curriculum as they’ve been part of our rich history. However, it is important to ensure that this is done in a way that is fact-based, objective and not pushing any political agenda like the proposed AP Black History course. This can be achieved by having a balanced approach to the teaching of history, ensuring that the curriculum is inclusive, diverse and inclusive of all perspectives.
Politics should be taught but not used as a weapon in our schools, period. While these sorts of classes have been added to curriculums throughout the United States, it’s refreshing to see a Governor have an opinion and guiding his state to have a more balance educational outcome. We applaud Governor DeSantis.
Governor DeSantis is Keeping Education in Florida Balanced by Rejecting AP Black History Class
In conclusion, Governor DeSantis is right in rejecting this proposed course, as it was not aligned with the guidelines and standards of Florida’s education system. He has shown his commitment to providing a balanced and objective education to our children, and we should support him in this endeavor.
