“My men can eat their belts, but my tanks need gas!” -General Patton (Probably at least near Ukraine)
As this war in Ukraine rages on and the bodies are stacking up, the US has decided to leverage the long arm of her “power and might to step forth” and help the Ukrainians in their struggle against the apparent aggressions of Russia. For some reason, both sides are hiding their casualty numbers according to the BBC in November, https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63580372, and news of any large battles, sieges, campaigns, or tantamount military actions are nowhere to be seen.
Unlike either the Ukrainian or the Russian forces, the western media blitzkrieg is as furious and momentous as ever with their armored divisions of articles, segments, and campaigns rolling over the screens of Americans, pumping life into the story of the Russia Ukraine war.
The newest thing, meant to be significant, is the US sending 30 Abrams tanks to the aid of Ukraine. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/24/politics/us-abram-tanks-ukraine/index.html Now, the initial temptation is to make an analogy along the lines; “it’s like giving medieval pikemen machine guns and watching them use them as clubs,” but we will give the bold Ukrainians more credit and assume that, with a little training, they will operate the state-of-the-art tanks proficiently.
Joking aside, is it not curious that, amid this terrible war, the movement of 30 tanks is international news? (If you are wondering why we are sending anything to another foreign war, I cannot answer, and my only advice is to beseech the throne of God, for I fear only he knows.) To put this in some perspective, during the second World War on the exact ground where this modern war is being fought, the Nazi “army group south,” was stomping over the Soviets replacing their occupation of Ukraine with an army of over a million men, only to have the rolls reversed some few months later by the revamped soviet army of a similar size.
The “army group south” contained at least 10 armored divisions (~500 tanks per division) and the soviet force recapturing the area was similarly sized. What then is the significance of 30 tanks? News on the placement of 30 tanks is categorically insignificant in a truly large and costly war. (More info on the scale of that conflict here)
The only time such a number was significant was at the end. In the waning hours of the Nazi reign, as the fist of Stalin strangled Berlin, one of Hitler’s last hopes was a small unit of some 6-10 tanks outside Berlin coming to the rescue. Of course, they would not be the salvation of tyrannical warlord, even if they could have been mobilized, such a small number could never have broken the Red Army.
Additionally, across the sea The USA was sending a river of tanks, trucks, men, fuel, and food in the holds of thousands of ships to both Europe and the Pacific. Such was not “news” at all but rather the standard assertions of a nation mobilized for war.
To say, in that era, that 30 tanks were being sent anywhere by anyone would be met with, at best, a blank stare. The fact that we are reading articles about 30 tanks is a testament to the infancy of this war’s scale. The BBC article also comments on some speculation of the casualties, but the numbers, even if they are low estimations, are orders of magnitude removed from a truly large-scale war.
I do not attempt to downplay the tragedy of life lost in this conflict but make no mistake; there are political goals to be obtained by the US officials in this war and any time they trod out the importance of this conflict, they are only doing so to profiteer off the death.
This brings us back to the core truth of all events and news. Politicians act to advance the cause of 1: their personal ambitions, 2: their party’s ambitions, probably 15 other things, then and only then do they prioritize their constituency. It is tempting to see elected officials as “in-the-know” for these issues and to trust them but they are only people. These politicians are only people like you and me, and their proclivity to selfish action is no smaller than ours.
As we read more and more of these stories, be guided by the north star of political thought: The State is the enemy. As more politicians press on us the need to be more concerned about these issues, let us only be more certain that we should not be doing that. These people will lie, cheat, and do whatever else they must do to enhance their political goals. This includes leveraging their servants in the media. Do not be fooled. Remember your true enemy.
