How Social Media is Leading to the Rise of Human Trafficking
What is Human Trafficking?
According to A21 human trafficking is defined as:
“a.)It’s the illegal trade of human beings.
b.)It’s the recruitment, control, and use of people for their bodies and for their labor.”

Human trafficking is happening in every city, state and in our backyards. Every day, men, women, and children are being sold, exploited and used and abused for either physical labor or sexual pleasure.
Human Trafficking is Modern-Day Slavery and is Growing by Means of Modern-Day Technology:
People are trafficked through many ways and sold into slavery, but the way that we are going to focus on is through modern-day technology, insert, social media.
History of Social Media:
In 2004, we were brought Facebook. The platform that connected people around the globe. While Facebook was/is a platform for connections with friends and family, it does not hold one-hundred percent true to that now in 2023, some people have a different agenda.
In 2010 came Instagram. Our personal highlight reel. A place to share photos with our friends. But it quickly became more than that. It soon switched from a digital platform where teenagers were sharing selfies with friends and silly videos from school to, well, the platform we all know in 2023.
Social Media Now:
Facebook, while still relatively calm compared to Instagram, is still not too much better, because there are some people who link their social media accounts meaning that what they post on Instagram will automatically show up on Facebook. So, a lot of the dirt that is on Instagram is creeping to Facebook, and it is not being censored. Conservatives and anyone who questions their agenda will be censored, but they will not censor, flag or take down the pornographic content being put out by kids.
Now, Instagram on the other hand is now a platform where young kids are posing half-naked, posting videos dancing provocatively, and you know who most of their viewers are? Men. Grown men. Liking and commenting as if they are watching some porn star. And still, like Facebook, the content will not get censored, flagged or taken down, instead they keep it up and continue to make money off the billions of users.
How Social Media Connects to Human Trafficking:
So, how does social media connect to human trafficking and often lead to it? Well, it is simple.
- People make a post.
- Someone likes what they see.
- Social media stalking begins.
- A fake profile is made to appear to be within the age of the individual being stalked.
- The “stalker” reaches out through a direct message (dm’s).
- The talking begins.
- The talking continues.
- They plan to meet up at a local area.
- They meet up. But the person they thought they were meeting up with is not the young, attractive kid they were talking to on social media, but instead, it is a pimp.
- Then, they are trafficked.
It does not take long. There is someone out there right now who is one social media post away from being trafficked.
This article is not pushing for people to delete their social media accounts and remove themselves from the digital world, but it is pushing to raise awareness, to shed light on the darkness of social media, and to be aware of the content that you and your children are putting out.
There is a connection between social media and human trafficking, and although it may be difficult to hear, it must be talked about.
Raising awareness will not only keep you, your family and friends safe, but will also lead to the overall decline in human trafficking.
Social media holds a lot of evil in its realm and people who are seeking nothing but to harm, but even so we are to lift them up in prayer and love them. Matthew 5:44 says “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;”
We are to lift those up in prayer who are seeking to traffic women, men and children on social media. It is difficult to want to pray from them, but we are called to do so. We are to pray for deliverance. Pray for a heart of conviction. Pray for change.
Many times, our prayers go towards the victims and yes absolutely continue to pray for them and for their safety, but we cannot forget to pray for the hearts of the traffickers as well.
In the realm of social media darkness, and the evil that goes on. Jesus can change it. But we must pray for it.
