A shooting in Monterey Park, California claimed the lives of 11 people Saturday night when a gunman opened fire at a Chinese New Year celebration. In Half Moon Bay, California, seven people were killed at a farm when a coworker opened fire. California governor, Gavin Newsom, immediately declared the second amendment was “suicide”. But is the problem really an issue with guns?
To put it simply, no. Gun control is not the answer to the mass shootings our country has been seeing over the past twenty years. No, our country has an issue with morality. According to a Gallup Poll, 50% of Americans believe the state of the country’s moral values is “poor”. 78% of those polled believe that the U.S.’s moral values are getting worse.
What Are We Seeing?
People can disguise their own morality, but not that of their friends. Birds of a feather …

Why do Americans believe we’ve lost our moral compass? Well, look at all the major shootings that have happened in the past few years. Uvalde, Parkland High, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs… The list goes on. Gun violence is absolutely an epidemic in this country.
Of course, there are other types of attacks that affect not only America but the world. Knife attacks are being seen all over the world as well. In Germany, two people were killed and five were injured in a knife attack on a train. In 2022 four college students were stabbed to death in Idaho. In 2016 there was a knife attack in London, killing eight people and injuring forty-eight.
While Democrats point their fingers and scream for gun control, it’s important to see what is happening in our world. Guns are not the problem. People will still attempt to kill others by other means (knives, vehicles, etc.). No, the issue is we as a people have lost our way.
Reasons for Morality Decline
What are some of the factors in our moral decline? I believe it can be narrowed down to a few things. Selfishness (narcissism), a loss of the family unit, and a lack of work ethic.
Narcissism
Narcissism is an adult state of emotionally immaturity that comes from not fully going through each stage of childhood development. The behaviors are ego-centric and mirror child like thoughts we have from 2-7.

Too many American citizens are self-absorbed. We especially see this in politicians. Remember during the Covid lockdowns when Nancy Pelosi was above the law and got her hair done while we “lesser” people weren’t allowed to go to salons? Or even when Ted Cruz went to Mexico to “vacation” during an unprecedented winter storm in Texas that took out power for millions? America’s politicians only care for number one, and the rest of us can kick rocks.
Too many people care only for themself. We live in a society where we need to help each other. It’s the concept that we are stronger together, not separated only caring for ourselves.
Loss of the Family Unit
America’s idea of a “family unit” has seemingly ceased to exist. This isn’t about the death of traditional families, with a dad and mom with two kids and a house in the suburbs. No, this is more than that.
Kids today are being raised by single moms who are praised and raised as heroes. But why aren’t we pushing to have a second parent who also passes down their values? Having a single mother means she’s probably working 50 hours or more while the child is either home alone or with friends.
Growing up I was the only one of my friends whose parents weren’t divorced. I was raised knowing my mom’s and dad’s moral standards, and I also held them dear. Being a good person, giving to others when you can, and don’t be selfish were some of the morals they instilled in me.
Now, most kids are coming from broken homes. 21% of American children are being raised without a father, and having divorced parents make children twice as likely to drop out of high school. Those children with divorced parents are also twice as likely to commit suicide than those with parents who are still married.
I believe a family unit doesn’t need to just consist of a mother and a father. Whether a child has two moms, two dads, or even grandparents, it is crucial that they are raised with love and good moral values being passed down to them from their parents.
Lack of Work Ethic
We recently moved from Texas to California to help take care of our family. I was absolutely shocked at the number of people not working in the state. So many folks out here are more than happy to live off the government and get everything for free.
Now, I’m not saying there aren’t people out there who need a hand up, in fact, I think most people at some point in their life have needed help. However, I think many people on welfare simply do not want to work and it’s easier to mooch off the government.
Hard work built this country. As a society, we need to work. Whether it’s building a sky scrapper, working on cars, or even running a TikTok channel, our society needs its members to work and contribute. Those people who are choosing not to work set a bad example for children, and don’t provide to help our society.
The Future
The Gallup Pole mentioned earlier showed that a large majority (78%) of Americans have a bleak outlook on our country’s future regarding morality.
The Gallup poll found that Americans are most concerned about these moral values:
- Consideration of others
- Racism
- Lack of faith
- Lack of morals
- Sense of entitlement
So, what is the answer? I truly believe to save our country’s morality, we all need to work together. Both parties need to work for us, the American people, instead of the lobbyists and corporations. People need to stop being so easily divided, and look at our commonalities. We’re all Americans, we all have diverse backgrounds, and we all succeed if our country succeeds.
