It feels like a sci-fi plot from a B movie. Strange-looking UFOs and eerie green laser lights invading the sovereign skies of the US of A.
But this is reality. And while the explanations may be simpler, the consequences of inaction may be just as catastrophic.
The New York Post is reporting that, according to experts, a Chinese satellite fired down green laser beams that were spotted over Hawaii last month.
On Jan. 28, The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) shared a video of a string of lights resembling the code from The Matrix, tweeting that the space agency’s Subaru-Asahi Star Camera on Mauna Kea, Hawaii’s tallest peak, had “captured green laser lights in the cloudy sky over Maunakea, Hawai’i.” They said that they believed the lights were “from a remote-sensing altimeter satellite ICESAT-2/43613 – a NASA craft.”

A week later, on Feb. 6, NOAJ issued a correction on their video stating that after running a series of simulations, the “most likely candidate” was the Chinese Daqi-1/AEMS satellite.
“We are sorry about our confusion related to this event and its potential impact on the ICESat-2 team,” NOAJ wrote.
According to The Hill, the University of Hawaii Institute of Astronomy’s Roy Gal said he thinks the lights are a Chinese satellite that measures pollutants, among other things. “It has many different instruments on it … Some kind of topographical mapping or they’re also used for measuring stuff in Earth’s atmosphere, and I think that’s what it is, environmental measurement satellite,” he said.
However, former chief of staff of Marine Forces Pacific, Ray L’Heureux, is not convinced. “I’m not sure, and this is my opinion, why the Chinese — who are probably some of the most prolific polluters on the planet — would be collecting data on pollutants on this side of the Pacific,” he is reported as saying.
Gal says that the lasers are not a risk to the local people.
L’Heureux was a little more candid. “It seems to me that those tensions are there. People are a little antsy, and I think that we just need to be a little bit more aware, vigilant,” he said.
If you need a soundtrack to process the information, this one seems appropriate:
