Kyrsten Sinema, a senator representing Arizona, has announced that she will be switching parties and will now be an Independent. Senator Sinema of Arizona wrote an opinion piece for the Arizona Republic in which she blasted the “rigid partisanship” she claims to see in both major American political parties. According to her, this “partisanship” has made it harder to reach a bipartisan compromise and has led to the exclusion of diverse viewpoints.
Sinema, who will be running for re-election in 2024, has said that while she will remain in the Democratic caucus, she would welcome the opportunity to work across the aisle. She stressed that she remains committed to helping ordinary Arizonans in spite of her departure from the Democratic Party.
“I consider it a great honor to visit every part of Arizona and hear your thoughts and ideas as I serve as your senator in the United States Senate. People in Arizona may have different opinions on many things, but we all share a commitment to honesty, common sense, and freedom “In her guest column, Sinema argued.
The Democratic Party’s already precarious hold on the Senate has been further eroded by Sinema’s decision to leave the party. Before she made her statement, the Senate was tied at fifty-one votes each way between the parties. With Sinema’s defection to the independent party, the Democrats will have a slim majority of 50 seats to the Republicans’ 49.
In her guest column, Sinema vented her anger at the polarization of American politics and the unwillingness of the two major parties to work together. She argued that this has made it harder for politicians to deliver on the promises they made to the people.
“The national parties’ hardened partisanship in recent years has left regular Americans feeling increasingly left out. Leaders are pushed to the margins by pressures in both parties, which gives a platform to the most strident and radical voices within each camp and assumes that the rest of us will simply follow suit. To the contrary, both major parties have shown a lack of open-mindedness by pandering to the extremes “Article by Sinema.
She continued by stating that in her opinion, compromise between the two major political parties is no longer the best way to make real, long-term change. Sinema has argued that “thoughtful legislating” has been sidelined in favor of “payback against the opposition party.”
For some fellow Democrats, Sinema’s decision to leave the Democratic Party means less progress on the party’s legislative agenda. Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona criticized Sen. Kyrsten Sinema and Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia last week for working with Republicans on key legislation, saying it has slowed down President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda.
However, in her guest column, Sinema emphasized that, regardless of her party affiliation, she will continue to prioritize problem solving and delivering results for Arizonans. According to her, more and more Arizonans are turning away from party politics and the “broken partisan system in Washington,” so she feels it’s important to provide an alternative for voters.
“Arizonans can expect something new and exciting from me. In the eyes of some partisans, this Senate seat is theirs to lose. Actually, no. Neither the Democratic nor the Republican party bosses in Washington have any claim to this Senate seat. It doesn’t belong to either of us, and I can’t claim ownership of it “Sinema drew to a close.
