A South Carolina lawyer, Alex Murdaugh awaits trial for the murder of his wife, Maggie and son, Paul which happened in June 2021.
Randolph Murdaugh started the family business 85 years ago in Hampton County, S.C. in which the sons, grandsons and great grandsons would continue the tradition of working as lawyers in the family firm. However, it all changed when power went above one’s head and an unknown driver found “Alex Murdaugh on a back-country roadside, covered in blood,” according to Greenville News reporters, Abraham Kenmore, Michael M. Dewitt, Jr and Daniel J. Gross.
Troubles before the murder of his wife and son took place around 2019 when Paul “borrowed his father’s boat to go to a house party and oyster roast on a nearby island. The 19-year-old bought booze at a gas station with his older brother’s ID before meeting up with five friends that evening. They partied through the last hours of the day. On the way to the Murdaugh river house, the teenagers stopped at a dock in Beaufort. Two of them, including Paul Murdaugh, popped into a local bar for shots. At 2:26 a.m., one of the teens dialed 911. Their boat had slammed into wooden pilings in front of Archers Creek bridge, near Parris Island. The caller, Connor Cook, broke his jaw in the crash. A young woman, Mallory Beach, was missing in the dark waters. Her body would not be found for seven days,” according to Greenville News reporters, Abraham Kenmore, Michael M. Dewitt, Jr. and Daniel J. Gross.
The article mentioned that Alex told the caller, Connor, that they would figure out what their next step would be after Mallory was found dead and was told not to speak to anyone at all. In 2021, Paul was on trial for “three felony counts relating to the crash: one count of boating under the influence causing death, and two counts of boating under the influence causing great bodily injury.”
Not long after pleading not guilty, Paul and his mom, Maggie were shot dead near the dog kennels at their place of residence in June 2021 and three days later, Randolph Murdaugh III died in his home. There is definitely a lot of suspicion ongoing in this case and the verdict is taking much longer than it should as it is such a complex case for all involved especially when it boils down to a rich, entitled lawyer with family history of other members going before a judge and presenting their cases.
Alex Murdaugh was arrested in October for “misappropriating settlement funds in connection with the 2018 death of his family’s longtime housekeeper, authorities said,” according to CNN reporters, Gregory Lemos and Jason Hanna.
Many people are under the impression that Buster, Alex’s surviving son was involved with the shooting along with Alex. It is very difficult to say at the least because Alex is under investigation for insurance fraud too of his late housekeeper.
Whatever the outcome maybe, if he is found guilty, “Alex Murdaugh faces up to life without parole and a minimum of 30 years in prison and also facing about 100 other charges, including money laundering, stealing millions from clients and tax evasion,” according to Fox News reporters, Rebecca Rosenberg, Stephanie Pagones, Lawrence Richards and Haley Chi-Sing.
In conclusion, whoever or whatever is ongoing in this case, will be solved and hopefully it will teach young rich dynasties a lesson that just because everything is handed to you on a silver spoon, doesn’t mean you should avoid responsibility when something bad happens.
