Crowder’s Initial Video on “Big Con”
Back in December, we were informed by Steven Crowder that he was soon to leave The Blaze, as his contract was set to expire soon. He said that he was not sure how exactly he would proceed from that point, though for a star like Crowder, he could go anywhere or do anything he wanted to. During the following month, he was, presumably, fielded with offers from all of the biggest names in the right-wing/conservative/independent media space.
But then he released a new video this past Tuesday entitled “It’s time to stop….” So immediately I watched it, curious to hear an update. I was only somewhat shocked by what I heard, I had honestly suspected all along that many in the conservative media space did not have the best intentions at heart. Crowder explains how “Big Con” is doing the bidding of Big Tech by upholding their draconian censorship protocols. He presented a redacted version of a contract and took issue with one clause primarily, that being a provision by which payments could be docked for being demonetized on big tech platforms.
Many speculated as to who this offer had come from, names such as Fox, Newsmax, OAN, Daily Wire, and Turning Point, were all floated, as it would need to be one of those organizations to even have the hope of affording a personality like Crowder. The next day, a response video by Jeremy Boreing of the Daily Wire was released, confirming that it was the Daily Wire who had offered him this contract.
Jeremy Boreing’s Response
As expected, his interpretation of the contract was very different from Crowder’s. This has sparked a feud within the right-wing media sphere, with many taking sides. Candace Owens even went so far as to accuse Crowder of “acting” during her appearance on Timcast IRL. Tim Pool initially came out in support of Crowder and agreed with him that these types of contracts are no longer supporting a tenable business model in the age of digital media. Daily Wire seems to be sticking with the legacy media contract model and the reason for this dispute is far deeper than just dollar amounts and ad revenue. They are coming from fundamentally different views as to how the conservative movement will move forward and begin taking back culture. Steven Crowder’s vision does not include relying on the established big tech companies for a paycheck.
Not being at their mercy and toeing their arbitrary line with speech is the only path forward if our civilization is going to survive. He is firmly on the side of building a parallel economy of our own so that we don’t need them anymore. While I like many of the Daily Wire personalities (Matt Walsh and Michael Knowles mainly), others I simply cannot stand (Candace Owens), I do not think that they carry water for big tech, as it seems Crowder is accusing them of doing. But this should give us all a moment to consider what the future of independent media will be and if it will stay that way for long.
I believe that regardless of who is right and who is wrong in this situation, Crowder has a valid point. He released a follow up to the response by Boreing, entitled “I didn’t want to do this..,” in which he plays segments from a phone call he recorded between the two of them, which seems to me like a serious breach of a supposed friendship. At this point it seems Crowder has made it personal, which obviously is a problem, but the initial issue he put the spotlight on is an important discussion to be having.
