- The struggle for independence from the king of England and the establishment of a new form of government was hard but completely necessary.
The mighty imperial monarchy had an iron clad grip on its colonized lands and people. The founders realized that centralized power will turn abusive. As is always the case, power corrupts, the monarchy pushed its people too hard and for too long.
- With many colonists escaping Europe for more food, religious freedom, land and opportunity, these brave and determined people came to the realization that the only form of government, that could survive, is one designed to serve its people, not the other way around.
- When we study the founders of these United States, the authors of the constitution and their personal and public writings, such as the federalist papers, we find a common theme; government exists to protect the rights of citizens. Why is it then that we erroneously proclaim that the constitution was written solely to restrict it? It wasn’t.
- I know what you’re thinking. That I have it wrong, of course the constitution restricts the powers of government, and on that point you’re correct, but that’s not what it’s purpose is, that’s not all it does, that’s just a natural consequence.
- One prominent place the founder’s declared the role of government was in the preamble of the Declaration of Independence. When one looks for the meaning behind what is written in the constitution, one must study the founding of the country in its entirety.Nearly every American should be able to recite the second paragraph, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This snippet is just the beginning.
- Before listing the kings crimes against its citizenry, the founders discussed what the role of a true government is, found at the end of this paragraph and often left out, “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”, here is where we have gotten it wrong.
- With the mounting evidence of abuses that have come to light throughout our history, and certainly within the past few years, we hear more and more often that the constitution only applies to the government. The answer to this quip is, yes and no. The government was tasked with protecting our rights. Period. That’s the whole mandate. There is nothing anywhere, in any founding document, that states we are unprotected from the abuses of other entities, quite the opposite. This is where the over-analysis of this simple concept has gone off the rails and why we must insist that it is remedied.
- The government cannot turn a blind eye to anyone violating the inherent rights of its citizens, not itself, not Twitter, not FaceBook nor Google. In fact, this was the exact thinking behind many of our laws, especially employment law. The simple fact is that even private companies cannot violate the constitutional rights of American citizens and the federal and state governments are responsible for preventing these abuses.The arbitrary line that snakes around our rights whenever the left feels they should be trampled, needs to be dissolved, and our elected representatives must act to ensure these abuses end.
- This is where the third paragraph comes in, “That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it.” It is painfully obvious that we need to alter it, or at least our understanding of its role in our lives.
- If you still disagree with my thesis, then certainly, the more recent incestuous relations that our government has tangled itself up in with private corporations does violate the principle idea that the constitution limits what it can do to its citizens. These companies, by taking payment and direction from the government to violate our constitutional rights, has voided any protection they may have enjoyed by the more liberal interpretation of the constitution.
- We desperately need to go back to basics, back to the fundamental roots of why this government was formed in the first place. We need to teach it in schools, starting at the lowest levels, and we need to work as hard to preserve our rights as the left does to destroy them, or they will be gone.
