As a conservative who still has left leaning friends, it is sometimes difficult to comprehend exactly how people I consider to be friends ended up agreeing with Democrat beliefs. I have had numerous friends go off to universities and consequently decide that my sins of voting for Donald Trump could not be excused, and that I could no longer be considered a friend because of it. That would be fraternizing with the enemy. I recently had a close friend determine I was no longer worthy of friendship after I showed excitement regarding the overturning of Roe Vs Wade after being solicited with the opposite.
The Cultural Divide
The fact that close friends could find this acceptable is a sad reflection of the abhorrent state of American culture. I could never be friends with someone who was so liberal that they actively celebrate abortion and transitioning children, but simply voting for a Democrat or having any Democratic beliefs should not automatically disqualify someone from having at least a small role in your life.
Polls have repeatedly shown that Republicans are far more likely to have Democratic friends than the other way around. Though not surprising, I find it particularly interesting since more Republicans live in rural areas where they would be far less likely to even come across people of the opposite political affiliation in the first place. Alternatively, most Democrats live in cities, where although liberals dominate the political landscape, there are still plenty of Republicans they could run into and potentially befriend while going about their lives.
Democrat Beliefs – Why Would Anyone Agree?
Many of those on the other side of political leanings than Conservatives only believe what they do because they don’t actually follow politics. They have been told repeatedly that Donald Trump is Hitler, Ron DeSantis hates gay people, and that rich people are only rich due to their theft of resources. Most apolitical Americans should not be blamed for their access to Democratic news sources, because those mainstream media outlets dominate the information landscape. It is the job of Conservatives to show our Democratic colleagues that there is always more to a story than what the CNN chyron reads.
This is the crux of the problem: Democrats always view things in a one dimensional way. Republicans want to lower taxes for everyone? This means they are helping the rich, and since rich people are bad, Republicans are bad. Since that is the top connection, in their eyes, there are no other reasons. See Democratic leader Chuck Schumer’s recent Twitter posts. Republicans don’t want to support LGBTIA+ alphabet initiatives? They must hate gay people as a whole. See any “unbiased” taxpayer funded NPR article on the topic. Or Ron DeSantis passes legislation to ensure students are not taught racial hierarchies in public schools? It must be because he is against black people having any political power.
All of these are simple examples of Democrats only seeing what is directly in front of them. They seem to lack all critical thinking skills necessary to investigate anything a step further to ask why. If they did, they might see some of the obvious benefits to these positions/statements, or at least understand (in their view) a flawed Republican reasoning.
The Solution
Democratic leaders in government clearly strawman all opposing positions because it benefits them. I don’t blame them for that, it’s part of the political game. However, regular, everyday Americans need to be taught to see beyond what’s directly in front of them. Since the mainstream media won’t do it, it is up to the Conservatives to do it for them. Defend your positions to Democrats in a way that they can understand. Explain to them why Conservative policies are superior to Liberal ones. Show them how to take just a second more to dig a little deeper into an issue to see what’s beyond the Democratic beliefs in headlines and talking points. You may see that the beliefs they think they strongly hold are little more than unsupported leanings.
The way forward in America is through higher awareness, more critical thinking, and more acceptance and understand of others. Acceptance not in supporting what is wrong, but in forgiving others in spite of their wrongdoings and holding out judgement until you see the whole story. It’s amusing that these three points would be considered as liberal a few years ago, but are now staunchly Conservative.
